What we will be doing week of 27th February 2012

During this week in literacy we will continue to practise the sound w and we will be learning the ee sound. We will be thinking about all the things that start with these sounds like watch, witch, window, green, feet, teeth and sheep. We will also be practising the last three sounds that we have learnt - j, ch, and z.

In our art lessons to reinforce the sounds that we will be finishing painting zebras and making watches out of plasticine.

In our maths lessons we will continue to focus on learning "one more than a number" for example
3 pencils add 1 more is 4 pencils .

To practise spoken English, this week the children will be learning the names of the different rooms that are in a house for example bathroom, kitchen and bedroom.

We will also be spending time finding out all that the children have learned this term and the progress that they have made since last term for example correct number formation and knowledge of sounds.

What we have been doing during the week beginning Monday 13th February

We had a fantastic time at the farm. We have been doing lots of art activities about the animals we have seen. All the classes have made a book about our visit in which we have all attempted some simple writing. We practised our spoken English at the farm and remembered the names of all the farm animals that we learned in K1 and made sentences with these animals, like "I can see a cow." "I like rabbits."
This week we have also learnt to read and write the sound 'ch' and thought about all the things that start with this sound like chocolate, chick, Chip and chair. To reinforce this sound we have made a collage picture of a chick.

This week we learned to read and write the sound 'j' and thought about all the things that start with this sounds like jelly, juice, jacket, jug, Julie. To reinforce this sound we made and drank orange juice. We also asked the children to practise the last 6 sounds learnt: g, o, u, l, f, & b and name things that STARTED with these sounds (guitar, orange, umbrella etc).

We also taught children to read the 'common word' 'see' and used this word along with other 'common words' we have been learning to read sentences, for example "I can see Kipper." and "I like Biff and Chip."

In Numeracy we countinued to practise counting out up to 10 objects and matching them to a number and reading numbers to 10 (or to 20 if your child is ready). We have been practising reading and writing the number '10' and recognising 3D shapes (cube, pyramid, cone, sphere & cylinder).
To practise spoken English, this week the children continued to talk about houses, using the expression " I can see", for example "I can see a door." I can see a window."

To reinforce this sound we made a collage umbrella and painted a stone to look like a ladybird. Thank you for practising these sounds with your children at home, as well as all the sounds that are already in their Sound Books.

We also taught children to read the 'common words' 'like' & 'and' and, as well as Kipper, they also met the Oxford Reading Tree characters Biff and Chip.
In Numeracy countinued to practise counting out up to 10 objects and matching them to a number, reading numbers to 10 (or to 20 if your child is ready) and filling in the 'missing number' on a number line. We also learned to read and write the number 8. Any handwriting practice at home of this difficult number would really benefit your child!

To practise spoken English, this week the children talked about people's appearance, using the expression "has got", for example Jorge has got brown eyes, Carla has got white socks.

What we have been doing the week of 16th January 2012

This week we have learned to read and write the sounds ´g´ and ¨´o´ and thought about all the things that start with these sounds like garden, gorilla, goat, gate, guitar and octopus, orange, otter, office and ostrich. To reinforce this sound we made guitars and drew oranges.
This term the children will be introduced to the characters from the Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme and they will begin to learn how to read CVC words ( cat, hat, pig) and common words ( I, like, can, am, get). This week they were introduced to Kipper and learned to read the words I and am: "I am Kipper."

In Numeracy we practised counting out objects and matching them to a number, reading a number and colouring that number of animals and learning to read and write the number 7 and count 7 objects carefully.

The children also learned how to say "I am 4" instead of "I have got 4" and use the words I and am in other sentences e.g. "I am Jorge."

We have been recapping all the work that we have done this term....reading the first 13 Jolly Phonics sounds and actions. Please continue practising these at home every day because they are so important and the children will be learning more new sounds next term, practising recognising the numbers to 10, reading and writing the numbers to 5, counting up to 10 objects by pointing and touching each one.

We have also be practising the songs for our Christmas show and started to make lots of (secret) things for Christmas.

On Tuesday we visited the Central Market and the children got the opportunity to use all the English names for fruit and vegetables that they have been learning. When we returned to school they cut up the different fruits to make a fruit salad. They the had the opportunity to eat some if they wanted to.
In Numeracy we recapped on how to write all the numbers to 5 and to read the numbers to 10, count up to 10 objects accurately and to rote count to 10.

This week we will be learning to read and write the sound "d" and thinking about all the things that start with this sound like dog, donkey, daddy, drum, dinosaur. To reinforce this sound we will make a picture of a dinosaur.

Next Tuesday we will be visiting the Central Market and the children will get the opportunity to use all the English names for fruit and vegetables that they have been learning. When we return to school they will be given the chance to cut up and eat some different fruits.

During the next two weeks the children will be assessed on what they have learnt this term, in order to write their reports.
In Numeracy we will be recapping how to write all the numbers to 5 and read the numbers to 10, count up to 10 objects accurately and rote count to 10.

This week we will be learning to read and write the sound ´c´ and thinking about all the things that start with this sounds like cake, cat, cow, car, Carlos etc. To reinforce this sound we will paint black cats. We will also be practising all the sounds we have learned so far: s, a, t, i, p and n and matching the sounds to pictures.

In numeracy we will learn how to write and recognise the number 3 and count 3 objects.

We have been practising the English phrase "I can see" so for example "I can see a slide". We have also continued to practise all the English phrases we have learnt so far this term. As we will soon be visiting the Central Market to look at the fruit and vegetables, we will start learning the English names for them. We will be practising how to say "I can see a pear" for example.

Next Tuesday (18th October) you are invited to attend meeting to explain our phonic scheme. It will start at 3:45pm and, as space is limited, only one parent is invited.

Also next Friday (21st October) the school photographer will come to take class and individual photographs of the children. Please ensure that your child is wearing the correct uniforme deporte on this day.

K2 TRIP! On Tuesday 4th October K2 will be going to the San Juan Park in Telde. Please remember sun cream and a hat. We will eat the snack there so we would appreciate a snack that is easy to eat in a park, like a sandwich (and NOT a yogurt). Many thanks.

We also tasted apples to find out if we liked them!

In Numeracy we learnt all about number 2...how to read it, write it and show 2 fingers.

We have been practising how to say "I like/don´t like..." in English. Also, because we will be going to a park soon, we are learning vocabulary like ´swings, slide, grass etc.

What we will be doing during the week of 26th September

This week we will be learning the first sound on our long journey to reading and writing! We will be learning the sound 'a', how to read it, write it and we will be thinking of all the things that begin with the sound, like apple, ant, angry, Alberto etc. To reinforce the 'a' sound we will be printing with apples and making a green and red repeating pattern, making pastel pictures of apples and tasting apples!

We will also be practising all our colours in English and playing lots of colour games to improve our English language skills.
We will be practising the basic English to ask for water and to go to the toilet, and also how to say "look!" in English to our teachers, instead of "Mira!" We will be learning to say "I like/don´t like..." in English. Also, because we will be going to a park soon, we will be learning vocabulary like ´swings, slide, grass etc.

In Numeracy we will be learning all about number 2...how to read it, write it and show 2 fingers.

We have been learning the sound 's', how to read it, write it and thinking of all the things that begin with the sound, like sun, sock, spider, snake, snack, Sofia... To reinforce the 's' sound we painted a sun, a snake and made plasticine snakes and snails.

We have been practising our colours in English and playing lots of colour games to improve our English language skills.
We have been practising the basic English to ask for water and to go to the toilet, and also how to say "look!" in English to our teachers, instead of "Mira!"

This week we will be learning the first sound on our long journey to reading and writing! We will be learning the sound 's', how to read it, write it and we will be thinking of all the things that begin with the sound, like sun, sock, spider, snake, snack, Sofia... To reinforce the 's' sound we will be painting a sun, a snake and making plasticine snakes and snails.

What we have done this week 12th September

This week we have been getting used to our new classrooms and the new routines of being in K2. So that means lots of practice tidying up, stopping and listening when our teacher asks us, learning new games in PE, sitting quietly at carpet times, lining up and walking around the school nicely and getting to know our new friends in our new classes.

We practised some basic English, like how to say what we are called ("I am Diego") and how to ask for water and to go to the toilet. We have also been learning the number 1 and how to write it correctly.
